PVL: Gazz Angels sweep Solar Spikers, secure QF spot

MANILA, Philippines — Petro Gazz played with full fuel and did not allow Capital 1 a chance to retaliate, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21, to clinch a quarterfinal spot in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) 2024-25 All-Filipino Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on Saturday.
The No. 2 team Angels asserted their dominance over the 11th-seeded Solar Spikers with Myla Pablo leading the charge.
Pablo tallied 17 points on 15 attacks, a block and an ace.
The Angels did not only secured a quarterfinals ticket but also extended their winning streak to 10.
The last time Petro Gazz lost a match was against Creamline last November.
Holding a 2-0 set advantage, Petro Gazz trailed away early in the third frame with a 16-10 advantage courtesy of Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Brooke Van Sickle leading the offense.
The Angels took care of their lead down the stretch as Maizo-Pontillas dropped the ball to send her squad four points away to victory, 21-16.
Capital 1 showed signs of life after cutting the lead to three, 23-20, with Heather Guino-o and Des Clemente-De Guzman fighting back.
However, Leila Cruz made a costly service error that sent the Angels to a match point advantage, 24-20.
Guino-o hammered a kill for the Solar Spikers, 24-21, but Ethan Arce finished the match, 25-21.
"For me, I am so happy, since I felt the trust of my teammates. Every training coach (Koji Tsuzurabara) told us to do our job and stay focus, so that in-game we can show what we can do," Arce told the press
Capital 1 will now move on to the play-in tournament.
