UST claims 1st win at UE's expense

(UPDATE) THE UST Golden Tigresses claimed their first win in the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament after taking down the UE Lady Warriors, 28-26, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, at the FilOil EcoOil Center on Saturday.

Angge Poyos logged 21 points on 14 attacks, four blocks and three aces on top of six digs to lead University of Santo Tomas (UST), which bounced back from its 19-25, 25-16, 14-25, 20-25 season-opening loss to Far Eastern University (FEU) on Feb. 15.

Regina Jurado also came through with 22 points and eight digs for UST which repeated over University of the East (UE) as the Tigers defeated the Warriors in the men's side, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19, in their morning match.

Cassie Carballo dished out 19 excellent sets for the Golden Tigresses, who came back from a 20-24 deficit to take the first set and recovered from their second frame defeat.

"A win is a win. We saw our lapses, and we will work on it to not repeat them again," said UST assistant coach Yani Fernandez.

"Communication and connection [has been the issue for us] and that's why we lost to FEU. We will review this game to prepare for La Salle [on Wednesday]."

The third and fourth sets saw the Lady Warriors fight back, but the Tigresses stayed composed, especially in the fourth period.

UST zoomed to a 10-3 lead, but UE made things interesting with a 7-1 run to pull within one, 10-11.

Powered by Jurado and Poyos, the Growling Tigresses put the Lady Warriors away with a 15-5 run to finish the contest.

Khy Cepada banged 20 points to pace UE, which stayed winless at 0-2.

At press time, the La Salle and Adamson's men's and women's teams were still playing.
